LOUIS – Mayor Tishaura Jones peels off her bedazzled facemask while standing outside downtown s St. Patrick Center, preparing to address the crowd about the facility s new women s center. On one side of a 6-foot black steel fence closest to the Catholic-based homeless shelter s entrance are clergy, dignitaries and other stakeholders. The other side is home to a large gravel lot where about a dozen homeless people – mostly men – sleep, wander and watch the mayor.

Volunteers welcome for three-day cleanup in New Bern underserved area

This a good weekend to visit two of New Bern s oldest predominately black neighborhoods to help in a community cleanup and to attend a public Community Resource Fair. Cleanup volunteers are welcome April 29 through May 1, any amount of time from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. PPE provided and Covid precautions will be in place. Call 349-8274. The city of New Bern Public Works will assist in supplies and trash haul-away. Following the end of the Saturday May 1 cleanup, volunteers and the public are invited to the 1 to 3 p.m. Community Resource Fair at The Omega Center, 800 Cedar St. It includes free hot dogs and hamburgers, free haircuts and health screenings.
