Controversial Berks warehouse plan approved over pleas of numerous residents

Impassioned pleas and accusations of money-mongering failed to alter the course of the proposed Valley Logistics Park, a controversial warehouse project in Maxatawny Township. When it came right down to it, the township supervisors conditional approval Wednesday of a preliminary plan on the project was pretty much a matter of law. Though her explanation was interrupted by shouts from residents opposed to the project, township solicitor Elizabeth A. Magovern explained that the nearly 300-acre site was zoned light industrial and the developer had complied with all relative township ordinances. - Advertisement - “We can’t just simply say to Duke Realty that we don’t like you bringing warehouses into an area zoned industrial for 20 years,” she said. “This is a corridor zoned industrial by a previous board of township supervisors.”

Meet your neighbors: 10% of county residents speak Dutch [The Scribbler]

If you live in Manheim Township or Millersville, you may find this difficult to believe: Up to 10% of Lancaster County residents speak Pennsylvania Dutch. Many also speak English, but at home they generally speak Deitsch. This is a finding of Frank Kessler, a Pennsylvania Dutch dialect enthusiast who lives in Belgium. He has a particular interest in Lancaster County because the largest Amish settlement in the world is located here. He often visits the area. Of the estimated 40,525 Amish residents of the Lancaster settlement in 2020, about 36,000 to 37,000 live in Lancaster County. The others live in neighboring counties. They all speak Dutch.

The administrator of a medical center in the heart of the Amish community in New Holland Borough estimates as many as 90% of Plain families have since had at least one family member infected with COVID-19, and that this religious enclave achieved what no other community in the United States has: herd immunity. Chris Knight/LNP/LancasterOnline via AP LANCASTER Late last spring a COVID-19 wave tore through the Plain community when they resumed church services, infecting an untold number of Amish and Mennonites in Lancaster County.
