Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, Netflix’s Eurovision movie starring Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams as two naïve Icelandic singers with dreams of campy stardom.
It might initially seem like a surprise that
Eurovision made it onto the Hugos list, although this underrated comedy
does establish itself as fantastical with nothing more than a knife and a door in one of 2020’s best movie moments. Yet even beyond that,

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, starring Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams,
has been nominated for exactly one Academy Award and nobody is more excited than the residents of a sleepy little town in Iceland.
The real-life Icelandic fishing town of HúsavÃk (pop. 2,300), where the film is set, has launched a clever grassroots YouTube campaign for the power ballad âHúsavÃk (My Hometown),â which is up for âBest Original Song.â
Having adopted the song as a local anthem, the town has created a series of videos that are charmingly silly and self-deprecating, just like the film. HúsavÃkâs fictional mayor, Ãskar Ãskarsson (played by actor Sigurdur Illugason) shows folks around town and expresses his hope that the song will win on Oscar night.
If you’ve seen
Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, there’s one character that stands out above all others: Olaf Yohansson, better known as the Jaja Ding Dong Guy. Played by Icelandic actor Hannes Óli Ágústsson, this surly resident of a small fishing village has but one goal in life: to hear the song “Jaja Ding Dong,” over and over again. Sadly the members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences determined that they’d rather hear
Eurovision’s “Húsavík,” which was nominated for a Best Original Song Oscar, while “Jaja Ding Dong” was cruelly stricken from the short list. We thought it might be a tender moment for the actor now known far and wide as the Jaja Ding Dong Guy, so we got in touch to see how he’s doing on this momentous but bittersweet day.
