CHARLOTTE, N.C. (News Release) While running a quick errand after dinner, Johnny Miller of Sparta decided to try his luck on a Powerball ticket and won a $100,000 prize.
“I am the happiest man in the world,” he said Thursday as he claimed his prize at lottery headquarters in Raleigh.
Miller purchased his winning ticket from the Circle K on Sunset Road in Charlotte.
“I had supper at the Waffle House,” he recalled. “Then I walked over there and got a couple of sodas for the next day and I said, ‘Sell me one of those Powerball winning tickets,’ and the cashier said, ‘I’ll try my best!’”

A Maggie Valley man is celebrating almost $130,000 in his pocket after he tried his luck on a Cash 5 ticket in early March.
Kevin Horn won $181,893 from a ticket he purchased at the Roadrunner on Dellwood Road in Waynesville, according to a release from the North Carolina Education Lottery.
Horn claimed the prize April 5 in Raleigh at lottery headquarters, and after federal and state taxes, took home a total $128,690 according to the announcement.
The Carolina Cash 5 ticket Horn purchased is $1, with drawings held every night. The jackpot April 5 was $100,000, and the odds of winning are 1 in 962,598, according to the NC Lottery.
