Second gentleman Douglas Emhoff, husband of Vice President Kamala Harris, visited a South Side barbershop in Englewood and a health center a few blocks away on Wednesday as part of the Biden White House drive to persuade more people to get the COVID-19 vaccine.
“We’ve been traveling all over the country delivering this message of hope,” said Emhoff. “But it’s also a message that we’re not there yet. A lot of people have already gotten their vaccination, but we need to do better.”
The White House conceded this week that despite efforts, it will not reach its initial goal of 70% of all adults partially vaccinated by July 4.

Illinois on Sunday recorded its smallest COVID-19 daily caseload in more than a year.
State health officials announced 342 new coronavirus cases, the fewest new infections reported in a day since March 25, 2020.
Those cases were diagnosed among the 38,386 tests, bringing the average statewide positivity rate to a record low of 1.2%.
State health officials also announced an additional 37 virus-related deaths. Eleven of those fatalities were reported in the Chicago area and includes a Cook County man in his 40s.
Illinois’ pandemic death toll is up to 22,949 among the nearly 1.4 million people who have tested positive since March 2020.
The news comes as another 48,500 vaccines were administered Saturday, officials said. That brings the nearly sixth month total to 11,531,838.
