BHUBANESWAR: The crematorium at Satyanagar, in the heart of the city, has been witnessing around 50 cremation every day for the past one week. Given the daily load, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Friday signed an agreement with an NGO to use a newly created crematorium at Bharatpur to perform the last rites of bodies. The Bharatpur cremation ground on the city outskirts can handle 30 bodies a day. It will be operational from Monday.
Official sources said bodies from other districts are also being brought to the state capital. There are instances of bodies being brought from Cuttack to Satyanagar crematorium, where the electric chulli is also being used apart from firewood.

BHUBANESWAR: The Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) has written to the Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) requesting it to find a suitable alternative to physical public hearings for granting environment clearances.
In view of the prevalent Covid-19 situation, the OSPCB has cancelled the public hearings for mining and industrial projects. The CII and the Federation of Indian Mineral Industries (FIMI) have also urged the forest and environment ministry to intervene in the matter and allow virtual public hearings.
“The cancellation order of the OSPCB has affected 10 projects, whose public hearings were scheduled between April 14 and June 30. These have the capacity to enhance iron ore production to 25.86 metric tonne per annum, which can help generate Rs 3,600 crore revenue every year. BHUBANESWAR: The construction work of the ambitious SCB Medical College and Hospital redevelopment project in Cuttack is likely to begin in September.
The progress of the redevelopment project, which has been taken up under the 5T initiative, was recently reviewed at a meeting chaired by state works secretary Krishan Kumar. Site issues like re-routing of electric lines, shifting of overhead tanks, demolition of vacated buildings and tree cutting and transplantation were discussed in the meeting.
Sources said as many as 41 buildings, mostly abandoned government quarters, will be demolished for the project. Among others, approval of the master plan by the Cuttack Development Authority, approval of the terms of reference of the environment impact assessment by the Odisha State Pollution Control Board were discussed in the meeting.
