The Government needs to create a level playing field across the retail, manufacturing and foodservice sectors if it wants any chance of curbing obesity and steering consumers towards healthier diets, members of the food industry told the House of Lords.
Professor Tim Spector called for compulsory warning labels for food packaging as he said Brits diet of poor quality food, is making them overeat and is fuelling diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure.
Dr Chris van Tulleken, associate professor at University College London, said the food industry was acting in a similar way to big tobacco by selling addictive products.
BMI is the go-to obesity metric, but there is increasing acknowledgment that it s an imperfect measure and can differ with ethnicity, sex, and body frame; hence, the growing chorus for alternatives.
