A solid job by opener Jakob Junis and one big inning on offense were enough to carry the San Francisco Giants over the sloppy, listless San Diego Padres. Mike Yastrzemski homered and drove in two runs and Junis opened with four hitless, scoreless innings in a 7-2 victory on Thursday night that opened a one-game lead over Arizona for the NL's third wild-card spot. The Giants were up 7-0 before the Padres got their first hit, a single by Matthew Batten with two outs in the fifth off former Padres pitcher Sean Manaea (5-5).
San Diego Padres reliever Robert Suárez was suspended for 10 games by Major League Baseball on Friday, the sixth pitcher penalized for using banned sticky stuff. The penalty was announced by MLB senior vice president for on-field operations Michael Hill. Suárez appealed the discipline to John McHale Jr., a special assistant to baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred.
Juan Soto homered twice and drove in four runs, helping the San Diego Padres beat the Colorado Rockies 8-5 on Tuesday night. Ha-Seong Kim and Trent Grisham added RBI singles in the ninth inning. Fernando Tatis Jr. drove in a pair of runs with a double and a bases loaded forceout for San Diego.
