Bashir was related to top Somali government officials and moved money to them, police and intelligence sources say.
Kenya and Somalia have disagreed on major issues including the miraa trade, the maritime border in the Indian Ocean and Somaliland.
Slain Somali-American businessman Bashir Mohamed Mohamud was on the intelligence system radar for receiving and sending huge sums of money to Somalia.
Kenyan government officials said he had first received millions of shillings from a top Somali government official before he channelled it back to various different banks.
The money, according to officials, sometimes moved through foreign accounts before ending up in Mogadishu, which raised suspicions.
Investigation officer Bernard Korir told the Star the body was found afloat River Nyamindi by residents.
“The body was discovered last Sunday, May 16, in the downstream area of the Nyamindi river. It was found naked and had deep cuts in the face,” he said.
It had two bullet wounds on the head and blood was also oozing from the mouth and nose.
On the day he was last seen alive, Bashir had driven into Miale Lounge and CCTV footage shows him dishing money, appearing to be Sh1,000 notes, to bouncers and security guards, perhaps in the spirit of Ramadhan.
At 6:49pm, the black Range Rover he was driving, registration number KCQ 007P, is seen driving off from the facility with the guards waving bye.
