More records set amid windy weather High winds didn t stop Bristol Bay s Nushagak district fishermen from setting another single-day catch record at over 1.8 million fish on Thursday, smashing the previous day s record. The total catch in Bristol Bay as of July 1 now stands at 9 million, which is nearly a quarter of the way to the 34.6 million fish ADFG predicted would be harvested this season.

One person dead, two saved after fishing boat sinks in Nushagak Bay

Credit Stephanie Maltarich/KDLG A commercial fisherman has died after a vessel sank in the south end of Nushagak Bay on Thursday morning with three people on board. Alaska State Troopers report receiving a call around 5 a.m. Thursday morning that a commercial vessel was taking on water. Two wildlife troopers responded immediately. Before they got there, they heard reports that the three people on board were in the water.  Authorities credit Good Samaritans on the scene with helping in the rescue. Among those was skipper Caleb Mikkelsen, who said his crew was getting ready for an opener when he got a call from a friend that there was a vessel in distress on the VHF radio.

Authorities credit Good Samaritans on the scene with helping in the rescue. Nushagak fleet hauls in highest single-day harvest ever, as more than 1.9 million sockeye return to the district Nushagak District fishermen caught the most fish ever in a single day in the history of the district.    Credit Hope McKenney Josh Crozby owns and operates the tender Icelander. He and his crew were on the south line of the Nushagak River, about 25 miles downriver from Dillingham. Crozby said the huge swell of salmon caught them by surprise.
