Biologists puzzled from huge discrepancy between Port Moller Test Fishery and actual catch

The Nushagak District’s harvests have been huge, but that’s been a puzzle for biologists and managers. The Port Moller Test Fishery calculates catch indices for Bristol Bay. The catch index lets fishermen and biologists know how many fish they should expect before it gets here, however it seems last week’s numbers were wrong.

Bristol Bay Fisheries Report: July 23, 2021

Credit Mackenzie Mancuso/KDLG The numbers The bay keeps pushing the record higher as 64.2 million fish have returned to local waters. Baywide harvest was 219,000 salmon as the season continues to wind down. Cumulative harvest for all of Bristol Bay is 39.2 million fish. Naknek-Kvichak district especially seems to be calming back down from their recent surge. Escapement got a light bump despite the Naknek tower no longer reporting. 213,203 fish made it up the rivers, over half of which went to the Alagnak River. Across Bristol Bay’s nine counted rivers, the total escapement is 24.9 million fish. Nushagak District Yesterday’s harvest in the Nushagak matched the Wednesday’s numbers at 23,000 fish. Average sockeye per drift delivery were at 252 and the season total harvest is now 17.57 million fish.

Izzy Ross hosts the Fish Report on July 1, 2021. A commercial fisherman has died after a vessel sank in the south end of Nushagak Bay on Thursday morning with three people on board. Authorities credit Good Samaritans on the scene with helping in the rescue. Nushagak fleet hauls in highest single-day harvest ever, as more than 1.9 million sockeye return to the district Nushagak District fishermen caught the most fish ever in a single day in the history of the district. Credit Hope McKenney Josh Crozby owns and operates the tender Icelander. He and his crew were on the south line of the Nushagak River, about 25 miles downriver from Dillingham. Crozby said the huge swell of salmon caught them by surprise.
