Nursery street shooting in Springfield draws memory of similar event (Letters)
Updated Jan 20, 2021;
I have just finished reading a second article on the incident of the shooting of a Massachusetts State Trooper in his leg when he went to investigate a report of gunfire via ShotSpotter.
About eight or nine years ago, while working in security, I came close to getting shot myself in that same area.
Fortunately, the shot missed me.
I was on patrol late one evening, while walking in between two large buildings parallel to Nursery Street approaching a small court yard when someone, racing down Nursery Street in his car, fired a shot in my direction.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. A trooper of the Massachusetts State Police was shot and injured late Thursday night while responding to a report of gunfire in western Massachusetts.
The sound of the gunfire reportedly triggered Shot-spotter around 11:17 p.m. in the area of 104 Stafford St. in Springfield, according to state police spokesperson David Procopio. After a preliminary investigation, Procopio said troopers believe two people exchanged gunfire in a parking lot.
A trooper and a Springfield police officer both responded to the alert, WCVB reported.
“Evidence suggests that upon the arrival of the trooper and officer onto Nursery Street, a male suspect fired two rounds at their cruisers,” Procopio said.

SPRINGFIELD, MASS (WLNE) – A 31-year-old man was arrested after a shots fired incident turned into an officer-involved shooting on Thursday night.
Just before 11:20 PM, a Massachusetts State Police Trooper responded to a multiple shots fired incident in the area of 104 Stafford Street.
A Springfield officer also responded to the area.
Both the Trooper and the officer turned onto Nursery Street, which intersects with Stafford, to find the source of the gunshots.
According to the State Police, evidence suggests that upon arrival, a 31-year-old male, now identified as Christopher Gardner, fired two rounds at their cruisers.
The Trooper was struck in his left leg while he was still in his vehicle.
