Detectives yesterday pressed charges against 15 people, including former lawmaker MA Awal, in a case filed over death of trader Md Shahinuddin, who was killed in front of his seven-year-old son in the capital's Pallabi on May 16 last year.

Metropolitan Magistrate Mahmuda Akhter passed the order after investigator, Inspector Syed Iftekhar Hossain of Detective Branch of Police, produced Awal and Babu before the court on completion of their four-day remand in the case. In the forwarding report, the IO said Awal and Babu gave important information about the murder which was being verified.

He instructed people to carry out the killing, according to AKM Hafiz Akhter, additional commissioner of the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police. Addressing a press conference, he also said Awal had gotten into a dispute with Sahinuddin over the construction of boundary gates and pillars at Awal s Ali Nagar project in Pallabi. Awal planned to kill Shahinuddin and his staffer Sumon was assigned to execute the plan in return for a huge amount of money. Sumon, with the help of others, hacked Shahinuddin to death on May 16, he said.

The accused are Mohammad Titu (30), Iqbal Noor (21) and Mohammad Sharif (20). Metropolitan Magistrate Dhiman Chandra Mondol passed the order after Syed Iftekhar Hossain, an inspector of Detective Branch of Police and also the investigation officer of the case, produced them before the court with a 10-day remand prayer. In today s remand prayer, the IO said Titu is an FIR-named accused and he was involved with the incident while the names of Noor and Sharif were found in the investigation. So, they need to be remanded to know the whereabouts of others responsible, the IO added.

After recording their statements, the magistrate sent them to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj. In their statements, the duo told the magistrate that they along with 10 others led by Sumon Bepari stabbed Shahinuddin indiscriminately with sharp weapons leaving him dead on the spot. As per direction of former lawmaker MA Awal, they killed the victim, they said in their confessional statements, an official of the court said. They were produced before the court on completion of their four-day remand in the case. On Friday, Awal, Zahirul Islam Babu and Nur Mohammad Hasan were placed on a four-day remand each in the same case.
