we may not be done with inflation just yet. newly released data from the federal reserve shows inflation surged again last month rising more than 5% from a year a earlier. christine romans devils into the numbers to tell us what the report means for your wallet. reporter: the pec price index rose 5.4% from a year ago and up 0.6% from december, hotter than december s monthly gain of .2%. inflation is a by-product of a strong economy. it s more evidence the fed may have to keep interest rates higher for longer. in line with other recent da tarks we also learned consumer spending rose a strong 1.8% in january, but personal income a little less than expected 0.6%. consumers are feel ing upbeat
there. what conditions were present to allow that to happen, and then we re going to look at what would prevent it from reoccurring in the future. let s discuss the incident and the investigation with transport analyst mary. thank you for being with us early on a saturday morning. so investigators sennarrowed it down to focus on the wheel bearings. why then might it a take a year to understand the causes? because when the ntsb does an investigation, they look at all possible a actors, causes, many different things that go into it rather than just physically what happened. then the ntsb when it completes its report and investigation, they must make recommendations. so they look at all various actors, parties to the investigation, and they have to do a forward-looking report that says in the future, this is what we need to change. they will call in the federal rail administration, the
department of transportation, and the railroads of america to adopt the changes that the ntsb makes. so they need the extra time to really do a deep dive and think what things should change so this doesn t happen again. definitely want to get your perspective on what they might recommend, but i want to ask about the reports saying that the crew was not at fault. they essentially said the crew did everything they were supposed to when the alarm sounded, but what does ta tell you if it led to ab accident of this magnitude? that s a pretty big clue there in the. ntsb report. the head of the ntsb said it was 100% preventable, but that the crew did nothing wrong. the preliminary report, which is just the facts so far, does set out what happened step by step, moment by moment, and everyone responded as the law requires. but that let s us know that the
