One year ago today, Great Grand Sun officially released its debut EP
Modern Weed. Anchored by the grooving and gently meandering title track, the collection offers a pretty solid introduction to the group. At the core is the duo of Joel McAnulty (aka Phantom Farmer and leader of long-defunct pop-rock outfit De Novo Dahl, one of many that couldâve been included in our recent roundup of top local 2000s releases) and None Intended Records chief Christopher Lord Byrd. On that record and a heap of singles and EPs theyâve released in the month since, theyâve been aided and abetted by a passel of standout local players like drummer Jerry Pentecost and bassman/songsmith Matt Moody.Â

Be it the Canadian lupine star scene or Omaha’s folk casio crooners, the sound is being brought together by a combination of sensitive souls coming together to create trouble.
After spending the summer months driving across the USA’s vast landscape, from desert hills to snow covered mountains and swamp based party towns, it was clear to me that there was much musical promise in even the most macabre of digs. Record stores in sleepy towns were packed full of kids being excited by unknown EPs and hand-stamped 7 splits from bands that lived within their own state boundaries. New York City is a tunnel of thieves and vagabonds; a nauseous tale of debauchery told through the medium of billboard advertising and raucous taverns. The smell of angst signals the desperation of the locals to ransack, purge and rape any hint of cultural improvement. There is much murmur of myth and manic dashes across the long, cavernous city to attend a variety of trophy shows and dancing queen competitions. The Kentucky Derby, this is not.
