Great Grand Sun Takes the First Step in ‘Father Sun & Mother Moon’ Track previews the group’s forthcoming LP Terra Incognita Tweet One year ago today, Great Grand Sun officially released its debut EP Modern Weed. Anchored by the grooving and gently meandering title track, the collection offers a pretty solid introduction to the group. At the core is the duo of Joel McAnulty (aka Phantom Farmer and leader of long-defunct pop-rock outfit De Novo Dahl, one of many that could’ve been included in our recent roundup of top local 2000s releases) and None Intended Records chief Christopher Lord Byrd. On that record and a heap of singles and EPs they’ve released in the month since, they’ve been aided and abetted by a passel of standout local players like drummer Jerry Pentecost and bassman/songsmith Matt Moody.

On Jan. 18, Americana pioneer, singer-songwriter, recording artist, pre-pandemic streamcaster, actor, and my longtime client and good friend David Olney died of an apparent heart attack midsong. He was center stage between Amy Rigby and Scott Miller at the 30A Songwriter Festival in the Florida panhandle. His last words: “I’m sorry.” His mantra, however, was, “Always be true to the song.” Understanding the covenant between the audience and performer, David earned rapt attention from folks wondering how to classify what they were witnessing.
