South West Encouraged To Thank SES Volunteers
Today is Wear Orange Wednesday (WOW) Day, a national day of thanks dedicated to the SES volunteers across Australia with 650 of those across the south west.
Held during National Volunteer Week, WOW Day encourages the public to dress in orange as a show of thanks for the invaluable contribution VICSES volunteers make to the community.

In the past 12 months, Barwon South West VICSES volunteers responded to nearly 2,700 requests for assistance which included 1,341 downed trees; 438 damaged buildings; 187 road rescue incidents; over 350 flood calls, and more than 230 requests to assist other agencies including Victoria Police. The busiest units in the region were South Barwon (463); Bellarine (312); and Warrnambool (281).
Driver remanded in custody following fatal crash
Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives have charged a man following a fatal collision in Carranballac, east of Lake Bolac, on May 12.
Detectives arrested the 30-year-old man of no fixed place of abode Saturday.
He was charged with dangerous driving causing death and remanded in custody to appear before the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court Sunday.
Emergency Services were called to Glenelg Highway after three trucks collided just after 5pm.

The two other truck drivers were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

New MPower leader wants to make an impact
Mpower s new CEO Kevin Mills is all about making an impact on people s lives.
Mpower is one of the south-west s largest not-for-profit organisations with 80 staff supporting more than 800 clients and Mr Mills says it already holds a great reputation for helping people to reach their potential and have meaningful community connections.
Mr Mills replaces Kerry Nelson as CEO and is just the third to hold the position in the agency s 47-year history.
After growing up on a cropping farm near Horsham, Mr Mills became a certified practising accountant (CPA) and built-up corporate experience in Adelaide where he focused on management accounting, leadership and strategy.

Electrical scholarships help career move
At 34, single mum Kasey Smith isn’t afraid to try for a major career turnaround in a traditionally male-dominated field.
The former high school teacher is now studying South West TAFE’s pre-apprenticeship electrical course and her prospects have been boosted by winning two scholarships.
Kasey has won a $1500 Powercor scholarship just weeks after receiving a South West TAFE Portland Aluminium Women in Trades award for equipment up to $1500.
The new scholarship is easing her childcare fee burden as Kasey pursues her dream job.

Port Fairy SES Unit left without a home, as current base is condemned
Port Fairy’s SES unit has been left homeless, after their Sackville Street base was found to be an unacceptable safety risk.
The Unit was informed on Friday that they would no longer be able to operate out of the base, due to a risk of electrocution and mould embedded in the building’s frame.
Unit Controller Stephen McDowell, said they were now scrambling to find a temporary home for their vehicles and equipment. At this stage we basically don t have a home he said.
