Subscriber only There is no Australian pastime quite like having a dip in the pool, but a lack of precaution can see a pool become a dangerous place. Drowning is the greatest cause of accidental death for children under five in Australia. Each week, on average, one child drowns, many in their own backyards. Research by CHOICE found more than half of Australian pool fences tested did not meet the Australian safety standards for pool fencing. Eva suffered serious injuries after being hit by a car on January 3. The seven year old was flown to the Queensland Children s hospital with serious injuries to her head and has only recently come out of the intensive care unit. Eva s Road to Recovery Go Fund Me campaign has bypassed its initial total of $5,000 and is on track to achieve its revised target of $7,000 thanks to community donations. Campaign organiser Leonie Bell posted an update on the page saying Eva is now out of the intensive care unit but there is a long road ahead.
If you are stuck in a queue for a COVID-19 test, keep an eye on the time or you could risk a hefty parking fine. Although the Local Health District has seen a jump in people wanting COVID-19 tests, Lismore City Council is ending the moratorium on free parking around Lismore Base Hospital next week. On Tuesday January 12, the council announced it will return parking controls around the Lismore Base Hospital to pre-COVID-19 conditions from Monday, January 18, 2021. In October 2020, the council granted a three month extension to allow councillors to study the impact paid parking would have on staff working on COVID-19 related matters.
