KALPETTA: “Adivasis would be separated en masse in the ground adjacent to the Valliyoorkavu temple in Mananthavady during the annual festival. They would be sold to feudal Adiga and Chetti landlords for a year. The Adivasis under the bonded labour had to sweat it hard in the plantations or fields from dawn to dusk for a remuneration of one ‘ser’ (a measure of quantity) of paddy grains. Varghese fought for the rights of such terribly oppressed lot during 1960s,” recalled Varghese’s younger brother A Thomas, who is 75 now.

The picturesque Cheengery Mala, a new addition to the tourism map of Wayanad district, has become a favourite destination for adventure tourists.
The District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) gave a facelift to the destination to tap the adventure tourism potential of the Cheengery hills near Karapuzha dam.
The Revenue Department had handed over eight acres to the DTPC for the purpose.
The destination was opened for tourists on December 21, 2020.
“The department has spent ₹1.04 crore for the first phase construction work at the site. As many as 4,670 tourists had visited the site till January 29,” P.P. Praveen, Manager, Marketing and Events, DTPC, told

Over 80 Forest officials chase pachyderms back into forest
A herd of wild elephants that strayed into human habitations near Panamaram in Wayanad district on Friday morning triggered panic among the local people.
Forest Department sources said a herd of four tuskers had entered a village at Mechery from Pathiri reserve forest in the South Wayanad forest division.
The herd was sighted inside a private coffee plantation at Mechery around 6.30 a.m. A team of Forest officials led by Chethalayath Forest Range Officer B. Asiff and Mananthavady Forest Range Officer K.V. Biju reached the spot.
