Community helps family keep beloved dog after owner's death

3/3/2021 David Contildes is pictured with his 180-pound “fur baby,” Winchester. NORTH SMITHFIELD – Hannah Contildes remembers her dad, David, as an animal lover. The 74-year-old North Smithfield resident would take time every day to walk his 180-pound English mastiff, Winchester, near their home. The family lives off Route 102, and the pair’s route would take them out onto the main road toward Brigido’s, where dog and owner were a common sight for passing drivers. “He would do it in the summer, in the winter, through snowstorms, it would not matter,” said Hannah. “As my dad got older, he did go a little bit slower, but Winchester didn’t mind, I don’t think, because he never tried to pull him.”
