Oil and gas junior Strike Energy has further upped its ambitions in Western Australia’s mid-west and is now targeting zero-carbon geothermal energy to complement its gas production and fertiliser manufacturing plans.
A non-binding deal announced on Thursday would see Strike, which is chaired by WA businessman John Poynton, buy all the existing geothermal rights in the Perth Basin through the takeover of privately owned Mid West Geothermal Power Pty.
The geothermal venture could work alongside Strike’s natural gas venture in the Perth Basin.
While no geothermal expert, Strike said that evaluation of the sandstones showed a high-quality geothermal resource in the permits with the potential to support up to 350 megawatts of renewable power - generated on demand - for 30 years.
