SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Some apartment complex residents were evacuated on Philinda Avenue Wednesday morning after a gas leak was detected outside the building.
Santa Barbara City Fire said it started around 10:26 a.m. on the 900 block of Philinda.
While the gas leak occurred outside the apartment, crews said wind was blowing it toward the structure.
Investigators determined the gas line was struck during construction that was taking place between two apartment buildings.
City Fire said about 12 people were being evacuated from both buildings out of an abundance of caution.
The gas company responded to the area and said it would be about one hour before the gas could be shut off. NewsChannel 3 is also at the scene.

“Fonseca refused all commands to stop, and his actions became more aggressive,” Wagner said. “Because of this, Fonseca was taken to the ground.”
Fonseca continued to violently resist on the ground and attempted to flee again as he was able to regain his footing. Officers were successful in a second takedown, but Fonseca continued to reach for his waistband and called out to Flores for help, according to Wagner.
It appeared as if Flores was going to intervene to help Fonseca, and additional resources were called in to assist, Wagner said.
Upon the arrival of additional officers, Fonseca was taken into custody and Flores was detained. After Fonseca was detained, officers located a loaded handgun in his waistband. When conducting a visual search of the vehicle associated with the two men, officers observed a second loaded handgun wedged between the center console and the driver seat.
