Santa Barbara apartment residents evacuated due to gas leak

Chris Escobar / NC3 SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Some apartment complex residents were evacuated on Philinda Avenue Wednesday morning after a gas leak was detected outside the building. Santa Barbara City Fire said it started around 10:26 a.m. on the 900 block of Philinda. While the gas leak occurred outside the apartment, crews said wind was blowing it toward the structure. Investigators determined the gas line was struck during construction that was taking place between two apartment buildings. City Fire said about 12 people were being evacuated from both buildings out of an abundance of caution. The gas company responded to the area and said it would be about one hour before the gas could be shut off. NewsChannel 3 is also at the scene.

Santa Barbara Police officers responded to the incident shortly before 4 p.m. in the parking lot of a shopping center on the 200 block of North Milpas Street, according to Sgt. Antonio Montojo.

Jeweler robbed in parking lot of Santa Barbara grocery store SANTA BARBARA, Calif. The Santa Barbara Police Department is investigating an armed robbery at the Trader Joe s parking lot. On Tuesday at around 4 p.m., police responded to reports of an armed robbery at Trader Joe s on the 200 block of North Milpas Street in Santa Barbara. At arrival, they made contact with the victim, a wholesale jeweler from out of town. The victim says they were robbed at gunpoint while in the car. They reported that a large amount of jewelry was taken during the robbery. Police say the suspects appeared to be targeting the victim and have knowledge of the jewelry in the victim s possession.

Officers were successful in a second takedown, but Fonseca continued to reach for his waistband and called out to Flores for help, according to Wagner. It appeared as if Flores was going to intervene to help Fonseca, and additional resources were called in to assist, Wagner said. Upon the arrival of additional officers, Fonseca was taken into custody and Flores was detained. After Fonseca was detained, officers located a loaded handgun in his waistband. When conducting a visual search of the vehicle associated with the two men, officers observed a second loaded handgun wedged between the center console and the driver seat.
