Man appears in court following Carlisle attempted robbery A man has been charged with attempted robbery and carrying a knife in a public place. Matthew Neale, 44, of no fixed abode, was charged following an incident near the Crown & Mitre Hotel on  English Street, Carlisle, at about 8.30am on Thursday, Nobody was injured. He appeared before the city’s magistrates’ court on Friday, where he was remanded in custody ahead of a further appearance at a later date. Police are appealing for witnesses in connection with the incident, Officers are appealing for any witnesses who may have been in the area at the time to contact them on 101.

Harold Nicholson, 71, of Holywell Crescent, was sentenced today at Carlisle Crown Court for five counts of rape. The offences, which were committed against a girl in Carlisle in the early 1990s, were reported to police in 2019. Nicholson was found guilty by a jury at a hearing in November last year. Detective Constable Kerry Gibson, North Cumbria Crime and Safeguarding Team said: “I would like to praise the victim’s bravery in coming forward and speaking to us in order to bring her abuser to justice years after the offences occurred.

At Carlisle Crown Court, a judge told 71-year-old Harold Nicholson that he had “terrified” his victim into not telling anybody about the rapes, which the prosecution said happened on at least ten occasions and began when she was aged 11. Nicholson denied the allegations. But after a trial he was convicted of five rapes. In her personal statement, the victim - now an adult - said Nicholson warned her he would kill her and members of family if she told anybody.
