Raccoon Found in S.E. Hickory Tests Positive for Rabies

Catawba County officials are reporting a case of rabies from a raccoon collected in S.E. Hickory on May 6. Hickory Animal Control Officers were dispatched to the 400 Block of 1st Avenue S.E. after a call came in regarding a sick raccoon. Animal Control collected the raccoon and its remains were sent to the North Carolina Public Health Laboratory for rabies testing. The lab notified Catawba County yesterday that the raccoon did test positive for rabies.
The Hickory Police Department will sponsor a rabies vaccination clinic on Saturday, May 22 from noon until 4:00 p.m. at the Winkler Park Activity Center (next to the Crawdads stadium) on Clement Boulevard. Rabies shots are $10 cash per vaccination.
