Kittery ME working on way to allow marijuana stores

KITTERY, Maine – A nearly 500-signature petition in support of retail marijuana establishments in town has been withdrawn, and town staff are instead working on a draft ordinance and land-use code changes to achieve the goals of the petitioner.  As a result of the withdrawal, a public hearing on the petition scheduled for Monday s Town Council meeting was canceled. Town Manager Kendra Amaral said the petition, which 498 Kittery voters signed, would have prompted a special election to be held within eight weeks. But the town was able to work with the petitioner, Josh Seymour of North Berwick-based Green Truck Farms, a medical marijuana company, to instead take the proposed changes through the town s formal process involving the Planning Board and Town Council, she said.

Should Kittery, Maine allow marijuana stores? Petition says yes

KITTERY, Maine – Nearly 500 residents have signed a petition urging the town to allow retail marijuana establishments.  At present, Kittery prohibits retail marijuana in its land use code, despite it being legal and regulated statewide. The Town Council last year reaffirmed its vote to “opt out” of retail marijuana sales, although 55% of voters gave a non-binding “yes” in November 2018 in support of a limited number of retail operations in the town’s commercial districts. Councilors at the time felt there was still too much to be ironed out at the state level, and they didn’t want Kittery – the gateway to Maine – to become an experiment, they said.
