KITTERY, Maine – Nearly 500 residents have signed a petition urging the town to allow retail marijuana establishments.
At present, Kittery prohibits retail marijuana in its land use code, despite it being legal and regulated statewide. The Town Council last year reaffirmed its vote to “opt out” of retail marijuana sales, although 55% of voters gave a non-binding “yes” in November 2018 in support of a limited number of retail operations in the town’s commercial districts.
Councilors at the time felt there was still too much to be ironed out at the state level, and they didn’t want Kittery – the gateway to Maine – to become an experiment, they said.
