2021 Budget: Many Cuts, Changes To Programs, And Borrowing From The Legacy Fund

The 2021 budget is now complete. What that means for the average homeowner, with an assessed house value of $240,000, is that they will be paying an extra $9.83 a month as taxes increased by 3.9 per cent for residents. This was set to be much higher, but in a 6-1 vote yesterday council approved borrowing $2-million from the Legacy Fund to keep the tax burden down this year. The borrowed funds will be paid back over the next one to two years (buying time to identify further cost reductions for 2022). The budget as originally proposed would have required a 12% increase over last year.
