The Cape girls’ track team is sitting at 4-0 and the boys’ team is 1-3 with three meets to go before the Henlopen Conference and Delaware State Championships.
The Lady Vikings are coming off a big win at Smyrna April 16, when Cape topped the Eagles 82-64. Both teams won two relays and traded points on the track and in the field. Going into the meet’s final event, the mile relay, the Vikings were up 72-69. The winner of the race would be the meet winner. The team of Hannah Maney, Aya Daisey, Regan Ciabattoni and Tia Jarvis easily won in 4:17, and the team celebrated the victory. A later disqualification and a mistake in the scoring put the Vikings at 82 points on the day. Smyrna has one loss on the season and will be a much tougher big-meet team in May. The Vikings are expecting it and looking forward to the challenge.

The Cape at Smyrna track meet on brisk Friday afternoon was a made-for-TV afternoon special, a story about kids suited for the child in all of us.
“A picture was done by the Smyrna girls for us and it was great . we arrived, and chairs were set up for our team and an empty chair was put out front with a framed picture and a poster that said, ‘Fly high Maggie from the Smyrna girls,’” said coach Tim Bamforth. “A class team and a great coach in Maura Schafer.”

The answer is that you use the Nike motto and you “just do it” because words creating memories versus silence can help in the healing process for so many. This week, as school wraps up and the holiday vacation begins, presents are under the tree, stockings are hung, but things are sure different from the norm. Very few races were held this fall and almost none this past summer. The Seashore Striders were fortunate enough to host the Seashore Classic half marathon/5K and the Great Pumpkin 5K in October, the Pumpkin Pie 5K in November and the Run with Santa 5K in December. The Striders raised money for a local family that lost their home to a fire, and collected canned goods for a local food drive.
