KENYA: Jesuit Refugee Service Asks Government to consider Legal, Moral Obligations before Closing Refugee Camps By Njoki Githinji NAIROBI, APRIL 16, 2021(CISA) – The Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) Kenya has urged the government to apply utmost forethought and consider legal obligations stipulated by international law and the Organization of African Unity (OAU) Convention before following through with the plan of closing Kakuma and Daadab refugee camps. JRS also asked that government to consider practical limitations and to remember the moral obligation to care for the most vulnerable in society and to pursue the common good. “JRS reaffirms the appeal from the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops and recommends that the Government of Kenya exert maximum forethought and caution in this particular time of uncertainty, wisely considering the legal obligations imposed by international law and the Organization of African Unity (OAU) Convention,” JRS said April 13.

KENYA: Archdiocese to Sink 50 Boreholes to Curb Clean Water Scarcity By Njoki Githinji BURA, MARCH 2, 2021 (CISA)-Archbishop Martin Kivuva of the Catholic Archdiocese of Mombasa on February 27 launched the 8 th borehole at Our Lady of Hope Shrine, Bura which is one among 50 boreholes the Archdiocese is sinking to curb an acute clean water shortage in the Archdiocese. According to the archbishop, the water project is supported by the Cross Catholic Outreach from America, in collaboration with Caritas  to help the archdiocese  access clean water. The launch took place during the 5 th annual Archdiocesan pilgrimage to Bura in an event that also saw the launching of the 2021 Lenten Campaign and launch of the Year of St. Joseph as instituted by Pope Francis.  To mark the year of St. Joseph, the Archbishop unveiled a statue of St. Joseph that will be circulating from deanery to deanery in the Archdiocese throughout the year of St. Joseph.

SOUTH AFRICA: Institute Warns Gates Foundation against Funding Unsustainable Agricultural Practices in Africa By Njoki Githinji CAPETOWN, FEBRUARY 26, 2021(CISA) -The Southern Africa Faith Communities’ Environment Institute (SAFCEI) has called on the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation to support natural farming methods to help Africa achieve food security and protect the environment and stop funding green revolution technologies and genetically modified seeds in Africa. “We appeal to the Gates Foundation to fundamentally revise how it promotes “food security”. We ask that it stops funding green revolution technologies in Africa through the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), the N2Africa project and genetically modified (GM) seed, including the Water Efficient Maize for Africa (WEMA) project,” SAFCEI said in a February 23 open letter shared on their website.
