For most of us, this background is probably as close as we’ll ever come to being in the cockpit of a 2020 Nissan 370Z 50th Anniversary Edition model.
Well, that could’ve been worse.
The Canadian auto industry suffered in 2020, but in many corners of the country and at many different brands, the market’s recovery was strong and sustained.
Through the summer, fall, and early winter, the market did not collapse like the most dire forecasts had predicted but rather found strength through pent-up demand, payment deferrals, and even new product launches.
In fact, for a number of months, poor inventory levels created more of a problem than lackluster demand or dealer shutdowns.
The final result was a 20-percent reduction in sales from 2019 levels. By the standards of virtually any other year, that’s a devastating blow. According to Desrosiers Automotive Consultants, only the 23-percent year-over-year decline of 1982 was worse. In terms of total volume, 2020’s 1.55 million sales produced the worst calendar-year sales outcome since – you guessed it – the 2009 meltdown’s 1.46 million units.

Over the years, I’ve competed in a number of these single-make events, including Viper Cup, MX-5, and Superlites in the Lucas Oil short track off-road racing series. My timing wasn’t right to compete in the legendary Canadian Honda Civic spec series, but when Nissan’s Micra Cup arrived in Canada, I was game. Nissan Canada
