Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra is a haughty man “puffed up with conceit” who wants to justify his “scandalous tweets” about the Supreme Court as “jokes”, law student Shrirang Katneshwarkar told the Supreme Court in an affidavit.
Comedian Kunal Kamra in his tweets had criticized the Supreme Court for granting interim bail to journalist Arnab Goswami.
NEW DELHI: Facing contempt of court proceedings for allegedly caricaturing the Supreme Court in a derogatory and undignified manner, stand-up comic Kunal Kamra told the apex court that irreverence and hyperbole were intrinsic to the comedic enterprise and that the powerful top court and its judges did not enjoy any protection from jokes.
In response to the SC s notice on petitions seeking initiation of contempt proceedings against him, Kamra wittily weaved into the reply affidavit his opposition to the government s decisions, including scrapping Article 370 in the context of special status to Jammu & Kashmir, termed the lockdown ill-planned and mentioned inaction against bank fraudsters.

New Delhi, Jan 29: In a recent development, stand up comedian Kunal Kamra has refused to tender an apology for his tweet against the Supreme Court for which a contempt notice was issued against him.
In his affidavit submitted in the top court on Friday, Kamra said, Public s faith in judiciary is founded on its own actions, not on criticism about it.
Kamra also told the Supreme Court that suggesting his tweets/ jokes could shake the foundations of the most powerful court in the world is an over-estimation of his abilities.

Trouble mounts for standup comedian Kunal Kamra and cartoonist Rachita Taneja who are facing contempt of court charges in the Supreme Court. The court on Friday issued showcause notices to Kunal Kamra and Rachita Taneja over their posts on the court and its judges.
Supreme Court has issues showcause notices of contempt against Kunal Kamra and Rachita Taneja and asked them to file replies within 6 weeks.
The court has also said there is no need to appear in person before the court.
The pleas came up for hearing on Thursday before a bench headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan which heard the submissions of advocate Nishant R Katneshwarkar, who appeared for one of the petitioners, and claimed that Kamra had posted several tweets scandalous to the judiciary.
The Supreme Court issued show-cause notices to stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra and cartoonist Rachita Taneja on Friday for their alleged scandalous tweets against the apex court. A bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan, R S Reddy and M R Shah sought response from both in six weeks on the notices issued in two separate cases. It, however, exempted them from personal appearances in the cases. Attorney General K K Venugopal had granted consent for initiation of criminal contempt proceedings against Kamra, saying the comedian s tweets were in bad taste and it was time that people understand that attacking the apex court brazenly would attract punishment.
