Angola to bring back kids summer recreation program | COVID-19

ANGOLA — The city of Angola’s Parks and Recreation Department has announced that it received approval from the city’s Parks Board to move ahead with hosting its popular summer recreation program this year. However, there will be a limit on participation in the interest of health and safety. Only 50 kids will be allowed in the program each week, said Nina Burlingame, the Angola Parks and Recreation department employee who helps plan and coordinate the program. Sign-ups will be done entirely online, another first for the program. The sign-up link will be posted on the city’s website and Angola’s Parks and Recreation department’s Facebook page at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, April 26.

300 bags of candy given out at drive-thru Easter event

ANGOLA — The city of Angola and the Steuben County YMCA collaborated on a drive-thru Easter event Saturday that saw a record turnout. Nina Burlingame, who works in Angola’s Parks and Recreation Department, said that 300 bags of candy were distributed Saturday morning. All the bags were handed out by 11:37 a.m. — just about 40 minutes after the event officially started. “This is definitely a record for us,” she said. The Easter Bunny stuck around for a while after the candy ran out to still greet the children and families who showed up later on. This was the second year that Angola had a drive-thru Easter Bunny event rather than the usual Egg Hunt, due to public health safety protocols regarding COVID-19.

Angola Parks and Recreation Dept releases 2021 events schedule

ANGOLA — When COVID-19 arrived in Indiana last spring, it threw everything into chaos. That was especially true for Nina Burlingame, the events and marketing coordinator for Angola’s Parks and Recreation Department, who is responsible for planning and organizing the city’s summer public programming. All but two of the events she had planned for last summer had to be canceled. The two that weren’t scrapped — the Fourth of July Fireworks and a Halloween celebration — were essentially modified for remote participation only. But this year, Burlingame is hoping for a return to in-person events, if conditions permit. “We were still pretty much in shock and disappointed,” she said, recalling her reaction to having to cancel most of last year’s programming. “This year, though, we’ve really had time to plan for these events to make them as safe for the community as possible.”
