Young council candidates are not all green

The average age of city residents is 33, one of the lowest in New Zealand, yet there were no Palmerston North city councillors aged less than 30. Swarbrick said all the young candidates were invited to the forum, Green or not, because it made it more interesting to hear a diversity of views. William Wood, 19, and Orphee Mikalad, 30, along with Rozenberg and Speller took up the invitation, but Nikita Skipper put in a late apology. Wood said it looked like voter turnout for the by-election might be as low as 28 per cent. That was because so many young people did not know what the council was, and because councillors were not engaging successfully with their community.

These will be recorded and played on Manawatū People’s Radio in the week starting February 1, from 9am, and will be made available as podcasts through the radio station’s website. Video recordings will also be uploaded to the Manawatū People’s Radio Youtube channel from February 8.

Former MP stands in a field of 11 for Palmerston North council seat

He said he had the experience in politics to make a difference on the council and for Palmerston North. The current council, with several Labour and Green Party members, needed balance and a strong, conservative voice, he said. Ball said the current council had made many “nanny state” decisions that should have been challenged. He pointed to “kicking out” the Defence Forum expo from the heart of New Zealand’s defence community, the likely banning of vaping in smokefree areas and attempts to force bars to close earlier. He said his parliamentary skills were transferrable to local government and he still had the contacts in central government to be an effective advocate for the city.
