Gwich'in self-government negotiations have been ongoing since shortly after 1992 when land-claims were settled. The four communities initially negotiated as one through the Gwich'in Tribal Council, this was until 2018 when the Nihtat Gwich'in Council decided to go it alone.

The Gwich in Tribal Council and Nihtat Gwich in Council put in a bid to be the new owners of the town s old welcome sign once it s taken down.

As one welcome sign in Inuvik, Northwest Territories, goes down, another will go up. However, the old sign won t be gone for long.
Kelly McLeod elected new president of Nihtat Gwich in Council
According to preliminary results published Thursday morning, Kelly McLeod has been elected the new president of the Nihtat Gwich in Council.

Kelly McLeod has been elected the new president of Inuvik s Nihtat Gwich in Council, according to preliminary results published Thursday morning.
McLeod defeated acting president Robert Charlie 108 votes to 64. According to a post on McLeod s Facebook page, official results will be posted in five days, as per the council s election policy.
