At its annual general assembly Wednesday, Gwich'in Tribal Council Grand Chief Ken Kyikavichik outlined how a 'Dinjii Zhuh Regional Government' would be structured, what powers it would have, and how long it would take to set up.
Bobbi Rose Koe was recognized for preserving and promoting Teetl'it Gwich'in traditional ties to the Peel River watershed. "I wouldn't have been able to accept it without recognizing my people," she said.
Gwich'in self-government negotiations have been ongoing since shortly after 1992 when land-claims were settled. The four communities initially negotiated as one through the Gwich'in Tribal Council, this was until 2018 when the Nihtat Gwich'in Council decided to go it alone.
