we re in san jose where police told protesters that the clock is ticking. reporter: let me show you what s going on at san jose city hall tonight. this is part of the occupy san jose demonstration, and it s friday night, these five tents have sprouted up. it s all part of the national movement called occupy wall street, a protest fwens what they call the greed and corruption ever corporate america. the additional issue here in san jose is that there is a law against camping out overnight at city hall. after an hour of what they called a general assembly, this group of 30 decided that they are going to risk arrest and leave their tents up. what do you accomplish if you get arrested? that there are people out here trying to inform people what s going on. all night, all day! occupy san jose. what this is about is being visible, going out there into the public, occupying and getting more support and growing as a movement and letting our presence be known. reporter:

sizzling spring. across much of the nation the heat is definitely on the soaring mercury from texas to new england, many hoping the temperatures aren t foreshadowing the season but still weeks away. curt gregory reports. reporter: with temperatures soaring into the 90s, new yorkers are trying to beat the excessive heat. my apartment is as warm inside as it is outside. reporter: but the extreme heat can also be deadly. five possible heat-related deaths are reported it in three states. and cooling centers for the elderly are open in st. louis and chicago. where health safety workers are going door to door checking on citizens. do they have an airics conditioner, do they have a fan? reporter: record-breaking highs of 95 in washington and philadelphia. blistering conditions for work crews but not everybody was miserable. i like the heat. i waited for it all winter. reporter: the broiling heat meant a short day for classes for students in philadelphia and new jersey.
