Employers are overlooking their frontline workers when devising employee engagement strategies, according to a new survey.
Digital employee experience platform SocialChorus found that a fifth of HR and internal communications professionals admit to focusing their strategies on office and desk-based workers, and just 12% prioritise deskless workers.
The survey also highlighted a concern among HR teams about the lack of understanding their business holds about how to genuinely improve employee engagement for employees who don’t work from a desk, and those working from home or utilising hybrid working.
Nearly half (46%) of HR professionals said they have increased internal communications during the pandemic. A similar number (44%) said they are now tailoring their internal communications in response to employee feedback.

HR and benefits heads left out of key decision-making 28th January 2021 10:29 am
HR and benefits heads are being excluded from key decision-making processes that aim to create better, and more cohesive, employee experiences.
This is the surprise finding of new research conducted among 750 chief information officers (CIOs) and 752 HR/internal communications (IC) professionals by pollster OpinionMatters.
The study, commissioned by Social Chorus, revealed that CIOs are increasingly the ones taking charge of employee experience decision-making, with 88% claiming it is they who need to have the final say.
The research found that just 11% believe investing in employee experience solutions is a decision for HR. This is despite the fact HR and benefits professionals report being far more actively interested in using such platforms as part of their benefits strategy to directly address employee issues.

With three boys between the ages of 6 and 9, Nicole Alvino knows all too well the stresses of working from home during a global pandemic. Sharing work and school space while trying to keep a balance between personal and professional lives has become the norm in households across the globe. With remote and hybrid work here to stay, keeping employees connected with their role and with a companyâs strategic objectives is no small feat. In order for any business to thrive â especially in a COVID world â people need to really understand the purpose of their role, have that connection, want to perform their role and be empowered to do so, said Alvino. And that means reaching every worker with the information they need, whether they work at their desk or out on the front line. Personalized and targeted employee communication has now become a much bigger need given the context of the digital employee experience.
