MONTREAL Quebec’s Labour Minister says he is concerned about the economic repercussions of a strike involving 2,500 ArcelorMittal workers announced Monday evening.
Jean Boulet said today in a statement a prolonged strike could have a significant impact on the Côte-Nord region and the province’s economy.
The 2,500 unionized workers are members of the United Steelworkers union and are affiliated with the Quebec Federation of Labour; they went on strike Monday evening after rejecting the employer’s offer.

Quebec Labour Minister Jean Boulet said Tuesday that a strike launched Monday night by 2,500 employees of steel mining giant ArcelorMittal could have “a serious economic impact on the economy of the Côte-Nord and Quebec.”
Boulet expressed his concerns in a message published Tuesday, less than 24 hours after the workers, members of the Syndicat des Métallos, walked off the job after rejecting a contract offer from management.

The employees work at two mines at Mont-Wright and Fire Lake, a pelletizing plant at Port-Cartier as well as at that town’s security, port and railway offices.
