whether it s china, russia, the united states, power is very fluid at the moment. you have a rise in china, a declining russia, those are causing problems in and of themselves. nobody quite knows where is going to be the center of power. i do think what you re seeing, and it seems at least from this side of the atlantic that other leaders who actually are our allies are playing a more leadership role. they were making the case that the globe should actually deal with climate change and the amazon is a perfect example. the administration called it a niche issue. i think that s why they re trying to separate, and present leadership on their own, where the u.s. is creating a bit of a vacuum. it does seem that there s more agreement that is taking place
sort of referred to as a niche issue and he s annoyed he has to deal with climate change at all despite it being a global emergency. i think a lot of global leaders are blaming trump for the global recession we re seeing for the downturn, blaming his trade war on china and his threats against europe, and he s been speaking this week like a sort of dictator from the middle ages, saying i hereby declare that companies must go around china. this is not how a u.s. president behaves. so i think they re trying to figure out how to deal with this leader who is just completely abnormal and seems to be unraveling a little bit. you know, shannon, in recent days the president sought to calm fears about the economy, whether he was brushing off talk of a recession or pointing fingers everywhere but at himself as he tries to defend his actions on china. is this sustainable? is there any insight into how white house officials are viewing this standoff with
other things going on. melissa: i don t know that speech is a niche issue. we talked about who is being shut down who was allowed to talk, i wish there was a market solution, kennedy. kennedy: you are absolutely right. that s what you have to touch on and this have to focus on. we can t forget the first amendment. no one ever talks about the third and on. that s the least sexy. [we need to bring that back up. this is the kind of conversation we should be having here in an open forum. not appealing to the government to please do something, because you wouldn t want a very liberal administration doing the same thing and squashing free speech on the left or in the liberty movement. i wouldn t accept it. i don t think that s what we should be appealing to. i get very worried when i hear the president talking about government solutions for violent video games without looking at the data. if you are concerned that there is a shadow banning, and there
have immunity from liability. under the communications decency act back in 96. i m looking at you because i know you know. i know in that big brain of yours that you know about that. you know what? they are media companies and they are deciding what goes out and what doesn t. you don t get immunity anymore. bye! a chris: that s a good point. their public he traded companies but they are enterprises. so it is a little bit different. i think the law has not necessarily caught up to this. kennedy: it never will. capri: because it will continue to move rapidly. i don t think this is the time for an executor order. i m not suggesting shadow banning is not happening. it seems like it is. but is this where the president s priorities should like? it sounds kind of the wrong message that the president of the united states is going to spend his time on an executive order dealing with this niche issue, which i think appeals to his base. but there s a whole host of
these democratic candidates so early in the race talking about issues of poverty. i would loved to nine people. i would love to see the republicans do it as well, but i can t imagine donald trump taking on the issue. by the way, rachel, two points really shocking for me, 140 people who were either poor or low income or struggling. that s a lot of people. that s 48% of the country. the other one was that none of the debates we ve had in the last several presidential cycles has had even one issue of poverty come up. and so i think it s important that we talk about something that s not just a niche issue. we re talking about nearly half the country that s financially struggling. so i m hoping, hoping, hoping that it comes up at the debate that nbc is holding. it s really important that they did this today. and that the candidates should have to compete on the good ideas. joy reid, thank you for making time for us. all right. we ll be right back. stay with us. all right. we ll be
