Nothing taps Teenage Engineering as a founding partner in charge of hardware
This is arguably more exciting than the Essential acquisition
Carl Pei’s ‘Nothing’ startup has a new founding partner in Swedish music gadget maker Teenage Engineering.
Nothing has named Teenage Engineering CEO Jesper Kouthoofd as its creative lead and Tom Howard, the vice-head of Teenage Engineering, as the head of design.
Teenage Engineering is an electronics company based in Sweden that makes cool audio gear like synthesizers. It even recently partnered with Ikea to make a limited-edition collection of home products.Â
This is huge news for Nothing since Teenage Engineering has some of the best hardware design in the tech game right now. That said, it’s interesting that the company is going after creatives with colourful past projects when all of Nothing’s branding so far has been white and black.
Weekly poll results: 128GB is the new sweet spot for base storage, microSD cards still important
A couple of years ago most people were satisfied with 64-128 GB storage, but requirements have grown since – now most people are looking at 128GB to 256GB for their next phone, according to last week’s poll.
The new poll skewed towards higher storage capacities. 128 GB is the sweet spot right now, but it won’t be long before 256GB becomes the preferred option. It already is for some and a not-insignificant part of voters are looking at 512GB.
Things are changing pretty quickly – two years ago, people that needed 256GB (or more) were in the minority. Now they are pretty common. What happened? 8K videos, RAW photos and HDR imagery happened. As did high quality mobile games.
LineageOS brings Android 10 to the Nextbit Robin, Moto G5, and more
LineageOS is the most popular custom ROM around, as it has extended the life of many phones and tablets that would have otherwise been abandoned. Even for phones still receiving software updates from the original manufacturer, Lineage can sometimes work better than the stock software, and it s a popular option for de-Googling Android devices. Since our last roundup, several more phones have been added to the official Android 10 build roster (and a few have been removed).
First, several phones have been updated from LineageOS 16.0 (based on Android 9 Pie) to LineageOS 17.1 (based on Android 10). They include the Huawei Honor 5X (kiwi), Nextbit Robin (ether), and LeEco Le 2 (s2). It s nice to see the Nextbit Robin and Le 2 continue to receive support from the ROM community, long after their manufacturers shutdown.
