The Lions – who have advanced to the 7-on-7 state tournament for 20 consecutive years dating back to 2000 – will venture to Graham as 7-on-7 football has resumed this year after the COVID-19 pandemic ended last year’s season before it ever started.
Saturday’s Graham qualifier is being split over two locations – Newton Field in Graham and Porcupine Stadium in Springtown. The Lions will compete in Pool B in Graham with games at 9:45 a.m., 11:15 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. against Krum, Wichita Falls Hirschi and Dumas.
Construction of the Graham High School scoreboard at Newton Field is set to begin near the end of April or during the beginning of May. The district has received enough advertising on the board to cover the cost over a period of six years.
The Graham ISD Board of Trustees approved the purchase of a new scoreboard for Newton Field in their December 2020 board meeting, replacing the 13-year-old scoreboard which currently is on the field.
The district has been working with the company ACE Sports to design the new scoreboard which will be a 23’x43’ LED video scoreboard. The overall size of the new structure will be 37’x43’ and will cost the district $618,669.66. Graham ISD Superintendent said the final designs are done for the project and said it will soon begin construction.

I must challenge claims in Alex Titcomb’s letter published Feb. 24, “NECEC won’t tarnish Maine’s woods.” It appears Alex’s exposure to the proposed corridor zone is limited to Route 201, an existing corridor bisecting the industrial timberlands of Somerset County.
Unlike the swath of internationally-shared wilderness NECEC would permanently bisect, these forests are regenerated to protect the long-term investments of big landowners. Unlike NECEC, these forests provide permanent jobs for thousands of Mainers.
Perhaps, Alex is unaware the true goal of NECEC is corridor status, from Lac Megantic to the Sheepscot River in Wiscasset. Does he realize the only industrial infrastructure in the proposed corridor zone is an international railroad? Can he visualize the territory from Quebec’s Chaudiere-Appalaches wilderness, through the wildly remote Moose River Basin, to the Dead River and the Upper Kennebec River Gorge?
