Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has been re-elected as President of the Republic, registering 60.7% of the vote.
In the presidential elections with the highest abstention since the 25th of April, held at the most serious moment of the spread of the covid-19 in Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa submitted himself to the vote as the most responsible of the State and, to that extent, of the pandemic management , as he highlighted in his victory speech, made at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon, where he was a student and professor.

Mortalities in 60 Portuguese municipalities were 1.5 times higher during December than the average of the last five years for the same period, according to data released by the National Statistics Institute (INE).
In a bulletin on the impact of Covid-19 on Portuguese territory, INE also noted that 61 percent of new confirmed cases of contagion by the new coronavirus in the last 14 days were recorded in the northern and central regions.
The exponential increase in new confirmed cases from 28 December culminated on 13 January with the highest number of new cases at seven days since the beginning of the pandemic: 61,273.
