The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting through its recent affidavit has told the Supreme Court that the NBDA (News Broadcasters & Digital Association) is trying to create monopolistic rights in.
The Supreme Court wants to strengthen the self-regulatory mechanism for news channels to bring discipline while protecting freedom of speech and expression. The court has asked the two representative bodies of news channels to make suggestions and posted the matter for hearing in four weeks. The court s order came on a petition filed by the News Broadcasters Association (NBA) against a decision of the Bombay High Court. The NBA s self-regulatory authority, the News Broadcasting Standards Authority (NBSA), has been found to be ineffective. The court also allowed the rival News Broadcasters Federation (NBF) to submit its guidelines. | Latest News India
The Supreme Court of India has called for stronger self-regulation among TV news channels to ensure discipline while protecting freedom of speech. The court asked the News Broadcasters Association (NBA) and News Broadcasters Federation (NBF) to suggest ways to strengthen the mechanism for dealing with errant channels. The NBA had appealed against a decision that refused to give legal status to the self-regulatory mechanism adopted by news channel associations.
