My Brother s Keeper, commonly referred to as MBK, is an initiative started by former President Barack Obama in 2014 following the death of Trayvon Martin that seeks to close opportunity gaps for all students, but particularly young men and boys of color, to help them reach their full potential in school and in life. It aims to provide a network of mentors and role models for students and build leadership skills.
Some of MBK s primary goals to keep students on track include having them reading at grade level by age 8, being prepared for college and careers upon graduating from high school, and giving second chances through education, treatment or training for anyone who needs it.

Newburgh Mayor Torrance Harvey said in February that, through a mutual friend s introduction, Harvey had multiple meetings with the father of two brothers who founded Ruff Ryders Inc., including Jaoquin Waah Dean. Discussions began with interest in development in Newburgh and blossomed into talks about bringing in the foundation to help with violence and crisis intervention, as well as starting youth entrepreneurial and mentorship programs.
