“We’re very, very excited, it’s fantastic news.” Wouters has been working for the New Zealand Spinal Trust for the past 10 years and became the chief executive in 2016 and said talk of a new spinal rehabilitation unit has been discussed for years. But Wouters said other Government priorities have meant it hasn’t received funding until now. “It’s certainly been needed and it’s long overdue.” The trust provides support services for people with spinal injuries and is based at the Ōtara Spinal Unit in Bairds Rd. He said he would like to see the new facility expanded to include at least 30 beds.
