“We’re very, very excited, it’s fantastic news.” Wouters has been working for the New Zealand Spinal Trust for the past 10 years and became the chief executive in 2016 and said talk of a new spinal rehabilitation unit has been discussed for years. But Wouters said other Government priorities have meant it hasn’t received funding until now. “It’s certainly been needed and it’s long overdue.” The trust provides support services for people with spinal injuries and is based at the Ōtara Spinal Unit in Bairds Rd. He said he would like to see the new facility expanded to include at least 30 beds.

It will replace the old one near Middlemore Hospital which cares for all patients in the top half of the North Island.
The $110m unit will be part of a new superclinic in Manukau, which will have four theatres, more than 30 clinical outpatient spaces, a radiology hub, a breast-care service, and an expanded dialysis service.
Health Minister Andrew Little said patients would get high-quality, integrated services in a modern, fit-for-purpose building.
