ALPENA “Trafficking Talks: Awareness In Our Community,” a free event with Rebecca McDonald of Women At Risk International, will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 12, at New Life Christian Fellowship, 317 S. Ripley Blvd., Alpena.
McDonald will present an eye-opening evening about the second largest and fastest growing branch of organized crime, human trafficking. Attendees will learn what it is, how to recognize it, and how you can be a force for change.
Adults and high school students are encouraged to attend and become informed. Due to the sensitive nature of the topic, youth younger than 14 are welcome to attend with their family, however parental discretion is advised. The evening is not appropriate for children.
Food, winter gear available through United Way

Those having trouble making ends meet can get help with winter outwear and food this month through United Way s ongoing programs.
If you have a coat or other outdoor clothing to donate, or if you need a coat or other gear, the Community Coat Room at United Way of Douglas and Pope Counties will be open on the following dates and times:

Nikki Weathers will be the first to say she has a big job ahead of her.
“I’ve gotten calls from people around the state and they’re all telling me I have some big shoes to fill,” she said.
Weathers was recently appointed to the Colorado State Fair and Rodeo Board of Authority, representing the eastern plains. The reference to “big shoes” isn’t so much because of anyone she’s replacing as it is the challenges the fair board faces in the coming year. Having cancelled all but the most essential parts of the 2020 state fair, the board is looking at rebuilding the event for 2021.
