NORTH PORT – Three candidates, including one familiar face from the November 2020 race for Sarasota County Commission, have filed for the March 9 special election to fill the currently vacant North Port City Commission District 1 seat.
Two political newcomers, Joseph Garren and Walt Grzenikowski, will be on the ballot along with Alice White, who ran unsuccessfully against Ron Cutsinger for the District 5 seat on the Sarasota County Commission.
A change in the North Port city charter means that the top finisher in the three-way race will claim the seat outright, regardless of the number of votes they receive.
While the campaign will occur with the state still subject to COVID-19 social distancing protocols, both the North Port Area Chamber of Commerce and League of Women voters plan to host online candidate forums.
