in fort myers beach, it is even hard to bike through the destruction. the messages from residents there, if you can send help, we need it. sanibel and cap teva islands cut off from the main land, only accessible by boat or air after, as you know, ian destroyed this major bridge that connects them to the main land. many of the homes there are in pieces or completely washed away. the coast guard is now going door to door, still trying to rescue people. make sure you have a bag for your clothes, with i.d., cell phones, wallets. emergency officials will run barges to sanibel island to help with cleanup and recovery efforts there. but let s begin in south carolina, cnn s nick valencia is in myrtle beach. tell us what is happening around you right now. reporter: it is a little hard to hear because the wind is such a major factor, just in the last few minutes these gusts of wind have crept up to about 40 to 50 miles per hour. and, you know, the sustained wind is almost as bad. f

thousands are without power still at last check with the emergency management, 13,000 were without power. portions of the pier have been broken off into the atlantic and there was localized flooding with roads inundated with water. as it stands right now, though, we do not know of any reports of injuries. we ve been checking with the local emergency management here. so far it s just significant damage to the piers. there was cause for concern a short time ago, about an hour ago, as we were reporting, a shrimp boat appeared along the atlantic ocean, just really out of nowhere, getting hammered by the choppy waves at the time. it was unclear if anyone was on the boat at the time, initially when we were reporting. we talked to the sheriff and he said the crew was evacuated yesterday by the coast guard. it was anchored a couple of miles away but intense wind caused it to drift onshore, just off camera there s a huge crowd surrounding the boat. somebody tried to climb on top of th

i m katie fang in for ari melber. we begin with a reminder of the violent threats facing our country s political leaders. paul pelosi, husband of house speaker nancy pelosi was violent aassaulted in his san francisco home with the assailant reportedly shouting, quote, where is nancy? mr. pelosi, aged 82, was home alone. police say the attacker struck him multiple times in the head with a hammer. he had a successful surgery for a skull fracture, according to the speaker s office. and doctors expect a full recovery. the united states capitol police say nancy pelosi was in d.c. at the time of the attack guarded by security, as she is at all times. a pelosi family member telling nbc news the suspect was trying to tie up paul, quote, until nancy got home. it was when the suspect wasn t looking that paul called 911. when the police came, the suspect said, quote, we are waiting for nancy. sources identified the suspect as a 42-year-old berkeley resident. there were posts where he po
