Hither Green: £6m refurb sees lighting and cover improved

A £6 million refurbishment of Hither Green station aimed at improving lighting and cover for passengers is complete. The works include the refurbishment of the platforms, installation of new lighting and removing and replacing the old timber canopy on Platform 2 and 3 with a tubular steel glass one, as well as work to improve the station buildings and footbridges. New tactile strips, which help blind people tell how close they are to the platform edge, have also been installed. A report earlier this year concluded that absence of tactile strips at Eden Park station in Bromley was a “possible causal factor” in the death of a blind man who fell on the tracks in 2020.

Direct trains from Middlesbrough to London set to start this year

Ben Houchen by Platform 2 at Middlesbrough station TEES Valley Mayor Ben Houchen today (Monday) revealed that direct trains between Middlesbrough and London will return by the end of this year, as work gets under way on the station’s £34million upgrade. In order to allow for more services and the longer LNER Azuma trains that run on the East Coast Main Line to the capital, platform 2 is being extended with construction work set to be complete by May, ahead of the restoration of the direct London service in December. Mr Houchen visited the station to see first-hand how the scheme was progressing which, just a year ago, was still a design on a page. Since then, the Mr Houchen and the Combined Authority have been working with Network Rail to significantly speed up the delivery of the improvements.
